Safety, privacy, or both: evaluating citizens’ perspectives around artificial intelligence use by police forces

Police forces are increasing their use of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for security purposes. However, citizens often aware and cautious about advanced policing which can impact negatively on the perceived legitimacy efforts police more generally. This study explores citizens’ subjective perspectives to by AI, including tensions between security, privacy, resistance. Using Q methodology with 43 participants in UK, Netherlands, Germany we identified five distinct towards AI forces. The illustrate complex, diverse viewpoints exhibit respect highlight that complex than portrayed. Our findings offer theoretical practical implications public engagement around general versus personal safety, privacy potentials moral dilemmas counter-reactions.
